During the WNBA All-Star weekend in Indianapolis, player Courtney Williams, identifiable by her pink buzz cut and earning $177,500 annually, confronted security guards at a club entrance. Believing her status as a WNBA All-Star should grant immediate access, Williams argued they shouldn't have to wait in line, stating "Bruh, we in the 'W’ and s--t and we just got done at the All-Star Game" and "We always on stream," referencing her Twitch channel. The guards did not recognize her.
This incident followed comedian Shane Gillis highlighting the league's lack of widespread recognition at the ESPY Awards. Gillis tricked the audience into applauding a random Black woman he falsely presented as a WNBA All-Star, demonstrating that outside of star Caitlin Clark, most players are unknown to the general public.
Later that night, Williams and her group attended a Sports Illustrated party featuring DJ Diplo playing country music. Williams demanded he switch to hip-hop. Diplo complied with the request, later explaining on Twitter that he embraced the challenge to be inclusive, shifting from the planned country set with Carly Pearce to accommodate the WNBA players' preference, stating he would "match" Williams's energy.
