PBA: Heartbroken Juan GDL owns up to Converge’s QF exit after OT loss to Ginebra
Juan Gomez de Liaño delivered a heroic performance, but his Converge FiberXers fell just short in a 98-99 overtime loss to the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings in their do-or-die PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup quarterfinal match. The defeat eliminated the fourth-seeded Converge, despite a valiant effort against the more experienced fifth-seeded Ginebra.
Gomez de Liaño, the team's super rookie, expressed his dejection after the game, calling it a "heartbreaker." He finished with 25 points, including a crucial four-point play that gave Converge a six-point lead with only 1:38 remaining in overtime. However, he lamented that unnecessary mistakes cost the team a chance to make its first-ever franchise semifinal appearance.
Ginebra, described by Gomez de Liaño as a championship contender with a strong home-court environment, staged a dramatic comeback. After Gomez de Liaño's free throws, Troy Rosario hit a three-pointer, setting up Stephen Holt's game-winning triple to seal the victory for the Gin Kings and send them to the semifinals.
