Luke Kornet's departure from the Boston Celtics in free agency has created a void in the frontcourt, as he signed a four-year, $41 million contract with the San Antonio Spurs. However, his former teammates, including Celtics star Jayson Tatum, do not harbor any negative feelings about his decision.
Tatum expressed support for Kornet on social media, posting "Much deserved" on an Instagram story featuring an ESPN graphic of the signing. Kornet was a beloved figure in the Celtics locker room and among fans during his over three seasons with the team, appreciated for his gritty playing style and upbeat attitude.
Kornet, who had never signed a contract exceeding $4.5 million in his eight-year NBA career, enjoyed his best season statistically in 2023-24. He played a career-high 73 games, averaging 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 66.8% from the field, and provided strong interior defense for the Celtics.
Beyond Tatum, Celtics director of player development Craig Luschenat also congratulated Kornet, noting he will be missed but deserves the contract. The Celtics plan to fill Kornet's role with Neemias Queta, Xavier Tillman, and recently signed center Luka Garza.
