The burn unit at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno experiences heightened activity during Fourth of July celebrations, with medical director Dr. Nicole Kopari citing the dangerous combination of alcohol and fireworks as a primary cause. Intoxicated individuals often fail to release fireworks in time, leading to severe injuries.
During the recent holiday week, the outpatient clinic treated at least 15 people—the upper range of their typical 10-15 cases. Approximately five patients required hospitalization for more severe injuries, aligning with average admission rates. Among current critical cases are patients facing potential finger or hand amputations, and others sustaining facial explosions that risk permanent blindness.
Firework-related blast injuries resemble improvised explosive device (IED) detonations, causing fractures, soft tissue destruction, and multi-system trauma. This necessitates coordinated care across multiple surgical specialties including plastic reconstruction, trauma, ophthalmology, and orthopedics.
American Ambulance spokesperson Ben Wiele noted that while traumatic injuries occur, respiratory issues from firework smoke constitute the majority of Fourth of July emergency calls. Asthmatics are particularly vulnerable to the dense, hot air. Wiele emphasized that burn victims should immediately call 911 for professional evaluation and treatment guidance, which may include self-transport to hospitals.
