FC Dallas announced the permanent transfer of Luciano Acosta to Brazilian club Fluminense FC on August 8, 2025. The terms of the deal remain undisclosed per team policy.
FC Dallas President Dan Hunt stated the transfer respected Acosta's desire to be closer to home while acknowledging his contributions. Hunt emphasized that the move provides roster flexibility to reshape the team. Chief Soccer Officer André Zanotta added that the transfer creates financial flexibility and aligns with building a competitive squad for the club's long-term vision.
Acosta joined FC Dallas on February 12, 2025, debuting in a Texas Derby victory. His acquisition marked MLS's largest cash-for-player trade. During his tenure, he made 21 appearances, scoring 5 goals with 1 assist. He achieved milestones including becoming the seventh MLS player with 75+ goals and 75+ assists, earning three Team of the Matchday honors, and making his 300th domestic appearance in the U.S. Open Cup.
Across nine MLS seasons with three clubs, Acosta recorded 272 regular-season games, 77 goals, and 98 assists. He holds FC Cincinnati's records for goals (54) and assists (62), leading them to the 2023 Supporters' Shield. Acosta won the 2023 MVP award, made three consecutive Best XI teams (2022-2024), captained two All-Star teams, and is one of six MLS players with three 10+ goal/10+ assist seasons.
Acosta began his MLS career with D.C. United in 2016 (permanently signed in 2017), helping them reach three playoffs and earning 2018 Best XI honors. He started professionally at Boca Juniors in 2014 before joining Estudiantes in 2015.
Fluminense competes in Brazil's top-tier Brasileirão and recently reached the 2025 Club World Cup semifinals, losing to champions Chelsea FC.
