The Phoenix Mercury have secured three championships in their history, with the most recent victory occurring in 2014. That season, under the leadership of first-year coach Sandy Brondello, the team boasted a strong roster and achieved an impressive 29-5 regular season record.
Candice Dupree played a pivotal role in the Mercury's success, having joined the team before the 2010 season via a multi-team trade. Phoenix acquired Dupree by trading away Cappie Pondexter, a key player in their 2007 and 2009 championships. Notably, both players were from the same draft class, with Pondexter selected second overall and Dupree sixth.
In Dupree's inaugural playoff appearance with the Mercury, she delivered an outstanding performance against the San Antonio Silver Stars. She scored 32 points, along with eight rebounds, two steals, and a block, leading the team to a 106-93 victory. Other contributors included Penny Taylor with 20 points and seven assists, Diana Taurasi with a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists, and Kara Braxton with 14 points.
The Mercury won the series against the Silver Stars but were subsequently swept by the Seattle Storm, who went on to win the championship. Throughout the playoffs that year, Dupree averaged 20.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.3 assists, showcasing her versatility and consistency.
Dupree's addition elevated the Mercury to a higher competitive level, culminating in the 2014 championship win. Before joining Phoenix, she played for the Chicago Sky, and after leaving, she joined the Indiana Fever, but she only made the playoffs with the Mercury. Her tenure with the team is now regarded as legendary, highlighting the success of Phoenix's decision to acquire her.
