The Los Angeles Lakers are being encouraged to pursue a reunion between Luka Dončić and P.J. Washington, his former Dallas Mavericks teammate. Analyst Tyler Watts of Lake Show Life argues that the Lakers, who are projected to have significant salary cap space in 2026, should target Washington when he becomes an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
Washington thrived as a starter during the Mavericks' run to the 2024 NBA Finals alongside Dončić. However, with Dallas having Anthony Davis and Cooper Flagg occupying forward positions, along with depth from players like Max Christie and Caleb Martin, Washington may seek opportunities elsewhere. Meanwhile, the Lakers could face a shortage at forward if LeBron James departs and Rui Hachimura leaves in free agency.
Watts suggests Washington would be an upgrade over Hachimura, particularly for his defensive versatility and three-point shooting. He could serve as a primary defender, allowing Dončić and Austin Reaves to focus on offense—a role similar to the one he played alongside Dončić and Kyrie Irving in Dallas.
Dončić and Washington developed a strong off-court friendship during their time together. Washington publicly supported Dončić after his trade and revealed that Dončić congratulated him following the birth of his son. Ahead of a March 2025 matchup, Washington expressed respect for Dončić’s competitive mentality while acknowledging their brotherly bond.
Financially, the Lakers could create up to $60 million in cap space in 2026 by allowing unrestricted free agents to leave. With players like Reaves and Hachimura unsigned beyond their current deals, many analysts believe the team will reshape its roster to maximize Dončić’s talents, even if it means moving on from longtime contributors.
