Norman Powell trade could be first the domino in Clippers acquiring Giannis

To earn significant NBA contracts comparable to All-Stars, players must deliver exceptional performances that exceed expectations; otherwise, teams question their future potential.

Norman Powell's performance for the LA Clippers in the 2025 playoffs against the Denver Nuggets was disappointing. He failed to elevate the team offensively, posting sub-par scoring averages and committing costly turnovers, despite having the opportunity to single-handedly advance them.

Although Powell's playoff struggles and his desire for a contract extension created pressure, his performance in the seven-game series against Denver did not ultimately prevent him from securing an extension. Even a dominant showing might not have guaranteed an offer from the Clippers' front office.

The Clippers' decision to trade Powell stemmed from their long-term strategy focused on pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo in free agency. Signing Powell to a potential $100+ million extension would have made him one of only two players (alongside Ivica Zubac) under contract beyond the summer of 2027.

This long-term commitment to Powell would have hindered the Clippers' ability to sign Antetokounmpo, a major priority, especially with All-Stars Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Bradley Beal departing. While theoretically possible to afford Antetokounmpo with Powell, his hefty salary would have severely limited the team's ability to build a competitive roster around Giannis and fulfill potential promises to sign other players he might request, making Powell's contract an obstacle.

Consequently, the Clippers traded Powell to the Miami Heat, where he could receive his desired contract, in exchange for John Collins, a player seen as possessing equal or potentially better talent. This move is viewed as beneficial for all parties, preserving the Clippers' strong chances of landing Antetokounmpo.
