The Phoenix Suns announced organizational changes to their basketball operations, promoting Brian Gregory from vice president to general manager. James Jones, who served as GM since 2019 and led four consecutive playoff seasons, transitions to a senior adviser role. Additional adjustments include Oronde Taliaferro’s promotion to assistant general manager and expanded responsibilities for Chief Innovation Officer Paul Rivers.
Gregory, a former NCAA head coach for two decades, played a key role in the Suns’ 2024 draft selections and will now oversee daily operations. Owner Mat Ishbia praised Gregory’s contributions to player development, calling him a “brilliant basketball mind” capable of elevating the team. Jones, recognized for his Executive of the Year award in 2020-21, was commended for his on- and off-court impact.
The Suns, coming off a 36-46 season and 11th-place finish, are restructuring after firing coach Mike Budenholzer in April. Ishbia emphasized the need for a team identity reflecting “grit, determination, and joy,” while confirming an expansive search for a new head coach.
Gregory’s background includes 19 years as a college head coach and a prior stint as a Michigan State assistant under Tom Izzo, overlapping with Ishbia’s time as a player. Taliaferro brings 15 years of NBA scouting experience, and Rivers adds 25 years of sports leadership, including roles with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
