There is a widespread belief that Cleveland Cavaliers forward De'Andre Hunter could be on the verge of a breakout season, with the opportunity to become the starting small forward due to Max Strus being sidelined with a Jones fracture at the start of the season.
However, this transition may prove challenging, as Hunter must maintain his performance level, exemplified by his 20 points, two rebounds, and two assists in 25 minutes in a recent game against the Chicago Bulls, amidst competition from key players like Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, and the returning Darius Garland, which could hinder his consistency as a shooter.
On the defensive end, Hunter holds an advantage over Strus due to his superior size, standing at six-feet-eight with a seven-feet-two wingspan, compared to Strus's smaller frame, making Hunter a more formidable defender.
Salary cap concerns, particularly the second apron, pose a risk to Hunter's future with the team; if the Cavaliers fail to achieve desired success, Hunter, who earns about $23 million annually, could be among the first non-max contract players traded, especially if Strus returns to form or other factors arise.
Additionally, emerging players like sophomore Jalyon Tyson and rookie Tyrese Proctor are showing potential for larger roles, creating a logjam at shooting guard and small forward positions, which could pressure Hunter, Strus, and Merrill to perform at their best to fend off cheaper, rising talents.
