The San Francisco 49ers have signed wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year deal to address their depleted receiving corps, according to a league source.
Valdes-Scantling brings deep-threat capability, averaging 22.6 yards per reception in eight games with the New Orleans Saints last season, and fills a need with current injuries to Brandon Aiyuk and Jordan Watkins.
He also offers familiarity with the 49ers' offensive system, having spent four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, who run a similar scheme, and recently working under Klint Kubiak, a disciple of head coach Kyle Shanahan.
His recent release from the Seattle Seahawks could provide insider knowledge on the division rival's new offensive strategies ahead of their Week 1 matchup.
The signing adds depth to a thin receiver group, with only Ricky Pearsall and Skyy Moore currently healthy, and the team hopeful for Jauan Jennings' return from a calf injury.
Potential downsides include Valdes-Scantling's age (turning 31 in October), inconsistent production—including a slow start in Buffalo last season—and a history of drops, with 24 over his career.
The 49ers may not be done bolstering the position, as they have shown interest in reuniting with recently released receiver Kendrick Bourne, though he is also drawing interest from other teams.
