The Philadelphia 76ers face significant uncertainty regarding their starting lineup for the upcoming season, particularly due to injuries potentially sidelining stars Joel Embiid and Paul George at the start. This situation, however, provides the coaching staff flexibility to experiment during training camp.
A major question mark exists at the power forward position. Last season's primary options, Kelly Oubre Jr. (deemed an ineffective complementary piece) and Guerschon Yabusele (who has departed), are no longer viable solutions.
As a result, newly acquired Trendon Watford emerges as a potential unexpected starter at power forward. Signed to fill Yabusele's void, Watford is expected to be part of the rotation, but starting him could provide crucial benefits.
Firstly, Watford brings needed energy and size, addressing the team's poor defense from last season, which stemmed partly from a lack of size and willingness for physical play. Secondly, he possesses a more well-rounded game than counterparts like Oubre, being a better defender, a more consistent perimeter threat, and a capable ball mover, making him a good fit for an ancillary role.
The 76ers have long needed a sizable forward willing to hustle and contribute on both ends. Watford fits this description, suggesting the team should seriously consider giving him a prominent role next season.
