FIBA has awarded the hosting rights for the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2027 to China for the first time, with the event scheduled to take place in Chengdu from July 17 to 25, 2027. This decision is supported by the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Sport, and Chengdu was chosen due to its experience in hosting major international sporting events, such as the 2025 World Games, the inaugural FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia in 2024, and the FISU Summer World University Games in 2023.
Chengdu, known as the 'Panda capital' and with a population of 20 million, offers a unique setting for participants and fans. The FIBA Executive Committee acknowledged the Chinese Basketball Association's strong track record in organizing FIBA events, including the upcoming FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2025 and a FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in March 2026, highlighting their ability to deliver high-quality competitions.
This 17th edition of the tournament will showcase rising stars in women's basketball, providing a platform for future senior players. FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis praised the Chinese Basketball Association for their hosting expertise and passion, noting that the event is expected to boost engagement and interest in women's basketball globally. He also referenced past high-profile players from the tournament, such as those from the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup All-Tournament First Team, emphasizing the tournament's role in developing talent.
In related context, the previous FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in 2025 was held in Brno, Czechia, where the USA team secured their fourth consecutive title. Before the 2027 event in Chengdu, attention will turn to the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, which will also be hosted in Brno, setting the stage for future youth basketball competitions.
