Indiana Fever basketball player Caitlin Clark showed support for her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, after he announced his grandmother's death on Instagram. McCaffery, an assistant coach at Butler University, shared an emotional childhood photo with his grandmother Marit Smaby Nowlin and wrote, "I refuse to say goodbye, so until we meet again," expressing his family's deep connection to her.
Clark responded to McCaffery's post with heart and prayer emojis in the comments, offering comfort. Her Fever teammate Lexie Hull and others also sent supportive messages. Marit Smaby Nowlin died at age 80 during a vacation at Minnesota's Lake Vermilion. Emergency responders were called Wednesday evening after a 911 call, and family members attempted CPR before she was transported to Cook Hospital, where she passed away. The cause of death remains undisclosed.
McCaffery's younger sister, named Marit in their grandmother's honor, shared a tribute calling it "the greatest honor" to carry her name. Clark and McCaffery have dated since April 2023, when Clark played for Iowa. While Clark became a top WNBA draft pick, she currently faces a challenging season with a groin injury causing a 12-game absence—marking her first missed games since college. Off the court, she continues supporting McCaffery through this personal loss.
