Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering an MCL tear in her right knee during Sunday's game against the Connecticut Sun, the team announced Tuesday.
Cunningham is the third Fever guard to suffer a season-ending injury in the past two weeks. Aari McDonald (broken bone in foot) and Sydney Colson (ACL tear) were both lost for the year after getting injured in the same game on August 7. Additionally, star guard Caitlin Clark (right groin) remains sidelined indefinitely, having been out for the past month.
In response to the injury crisis, the Fever signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert. Cunningham, in her first season with Indiana after being traded from Phoenix, was averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds while making 13 starts. The team stated she is expected to make a full recovery.
With less than a month until the postseason, Indiana (19-16) is in sixth place in the standings and is trying to maintain its playoff positioning, as the top eight teams qualify. Regarding Caitlin Clark's potential return before the end of the regular season, coach Stephanie White said before Sunday's game, "That's the hope. The hope is that she's back."
