Sheriff’s detectives arrested 42-year-old Shaun Donald Hertlein of Goleta on May 9, 2025, for alleged felony child sex crimes, including sending sexual images to a minor, electronic communication with intent to commit crimes, and possession of obscene images of a child. Authorities believe there may be additional survivors who had contact with Hertlein through his roles at South Coast Church and as a former walk-on assistant football coach at Dos Pueblos High School (DPHS), where he worked until 2024.
Dos Pueblos Principal Bill Woodard confirmed Hertlein is no longer affiliated with the school or the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD), which emphasized thorough background checks for employees. The district urged families to report information to school administration and highlighted mental health resources for students.
Hertlein remains in custody with $500,000 bail. Detectives ask anyone with information about his crimes to contact Detective F. Arnoldi or submit anonymous tips via the Sheriff’s Office website or hotline. Separately, another former DPHS employee, Miguel “Michael” Angel Juarez, was arrested on May 8 for sexual battery at a post-prom event; detectives suspect additional victims in that case.
The Sheriff’s Office shared online safety tips for parents, including monitoring children’s social media use, setting screen-time rules, and prohibiting sharing personal information or intimate photos. Survivor support services are available through local hotlines and advocacy organizations.
