Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu has confirmed that goalkeeper Yann Sommer will retain his starting position in the upcoming Champions League match against Ajax. During his pre-match press conference, Chivu firmly dismissed suggestions of dropping Sommer, emphasizing the player's importance to the team and stating it would be unfair to criticize him based on recent performances.
Chivu also provided an update on striker Lautaro Martinez, indicating that the Argentine could be available to start despite missing training due to a minor issue. The final decision will depend on Martinez's condition ahead of the match.
The game against Ajax marks Inter's first Champions League outing under Chivu and comes on the heels of a disappointing 4-3 loss to Juventus in Serie A. That defeat contributed to Inter's worst league start in 14 years, increasing pressure on the Romanian manager. Nonetheless, Chivu expressed confidence in his team's ability to rebound with a victory in Amsterdam.
Notably, Chivu has personal history with Ajax, having played for the Dutch club for four years before moving to Serie A in 2003. Despite Inter being considered favorites, he acknowledged that the match will be challenging.
