Former NBA player Daniel Theis signed with AS Monaco in February, turning down an offer from Greek club Panathinaikos. Despite being waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Theis revealed he also had an opportunity to stay in the NBA with an offer from the New York Knicks.
Theis explained that Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau presented the offer as insurance in case Mitchell Robinson couldn't play upon returning from injury. Concerned about potentially not playing at all for the rest of the season and its impact on his summer prospects, Theis decided to move to Europe, believing playing well there would improve his chances. He stated Monaco coach Vassilis Spanoulis's call was a key factor and that his decision wasn't solely based on money, but also considered the club's environment and lifestyle.
Having played for six different NBA teams, Theis expressed weariness with the constant movement inherent in NBA trades. He described the abruptness of trades, comparing the process to swapping "Panini stickers" where players are moved based on contract fits rather than team desire. He emphasized the difficulty of frequent relocations, especially for players with families, highlighting the business realities of the league.
