Lionel Messi backed to complete Newell's Old Boys homecoming transfer by Argentine FA president amid Inter Miami contract uncertainty

Lionel Messi's contract with Inter Miami is set to expire after the 2025 MLS season, though he holds an option to extend it for an additional 12 months, which would cover the next World Cup. While Inter Miami hopes to secure a new deal, speculation surrounds Messi's future, including potential moves to the Saudi Pro League where teams reportedly aim to reunite him with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Another possibility is a return to his boyhood club, Newell's Old Boys in Argentina. Messi has previously expressed a desire to play competitively for Newell's before retiring. This path mirrors that of his friend Angel Di Maria, who recently returned to his first club, Rosario Central, at age 37.

Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine FA, expressed hope for Messi's eventual return to Argentina when questioned about it during Di Maria's presentation. Adding to this, Newell's manager Cristian Fabbiani has stated his interest in bringing Messi back on a short-term contract.

Despite the speculation, Messi himself has given little indication about his long-term plans. He is currently in exceptional form for Inter Miami, having scored two goals in each of his last five consecutive MLS matches.
