LeBron James is expected to miss the start of the season as he recovers from sciatica on his right side, with his condition scheduled for reevaluation in three to four weeks. In his absence, Lakers superstar Luka Doncic stated that he does not feel compelled to take on a larger role, emphasizing that his focus is simply on playing basketball and doing whatever it takes to secure wins for the team.
The Lakers have struggled in the preseason without James and Doncic, posting an 0-2 record with losses to the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. They are set to play three preseason games in four days, including a rematch against the Warriors, followed by road games against the Suns and the Dallas Mavericks. Coach JJ Redick has confirmed that Doncic will participate in two of the remaining four preseason games, as his workload was managed earlier in the week to reduce wear and tear after his participation with Slovenia in EuroBasket.
Redick is actively working on determining the starting lineup in James' absence, noting that Doncic, guard Austin Reaves, and center Deandre Ayton will fill three of the five spots. The remaining two positions are under consideration, with Rui Hachimura, who started most games last season, and other players like Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, and Marcus Smart providing options. Smart, who has been sidelined with Achilles tendinopathy, is expected to play against the Warriors. Redick is also developing separate lineups and rotations for when James is playing versus when he is not.
Despite James' absence from games, Doncic mentioned that they have communicated frequently during practice to build team chemistry, and James will contribute from the bench during matches. The team is navigating these adjustments as they prepare for the regular season.
