Pyramids FC, the current African club champions, are set to make history by facing Auckland City, winners of the OFC Men’s Champions League, in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup play-off. This marks the first official match for the Egyptian club against a team from outside Africa, a significant milestone for both the club and Egyptian football.
Mamdouh Eid, the club's chief executive, emphasized the importance of this encounter, describing it as a major step in Pyramids' growth and an opportunity to gain experience on an international stage. He also highlighted the responsibility the team carries as representatives of Egypt and Africa, aiming to make a strong impression in the tournament featuring continental champions.
The sudden-death match is scheduled for 6am NZT on Monday, September 15, in Cairo. Eid views it as a historic chance for Pyramids to compete at a high level and hopes it will pave the way for future success, including a strong performance in the 2029 Club World Cup.
Eid also noted that fierce competition has strengthened Pyramids as a team and expressed pride in their achievement, which he sees as a victory for all of Egyptian football. The tournament includes other continental champions such as Al Ahli (Asia), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Paris Saint-Germain (Europe), and the eventual winner of South America's Copa Libertadores.
