Romano: Milan snubbed Real Madrid stalwart on free transfer – the reasons

AC Milan reportedly considered signing Lucas Vázquez from Real Madrid towards the end of the summer transfer window to strengthen their right-back position. This interest emerged following a significant clear-out in that area, with Davide Calabria, Emerson Royal, Kyle Walker, Alessandro Florenzi, and Filippo Terracciano all having departed the club in recent months. Ultimately, Milan's only acquisition for the role was Zachary Athekame from Young Boys, though other options were explored.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Milan discussed the possibility of bringing in Vázquez, an experienced player whose contract with Real Madrid was expiring, making him available on a free transfer. The club was attracted by his international pedigree, extensive trophy-winning experience—having secured over 20 titles with Real Madrid—and his tactical versatility, which would allow him to operate effectively in multiple defensive roles.

Despite the initial appeal, Milan decided against pursuing Vázquez. The management prioritized younger players who align with the club's long-term development strategy. Additionally, while Vázquez offered flexibility—capable of playing as a full-back in a four-man defense or as a wing-back in a three-man setup—he was not deemed a top tactical priority. As a result, the 34-year-old ultimately joined Leverkusen instead.
