The Houston Texans underwent a significant overhaul of their receiving corps this offseason due to Tank Dell's season-long absence and Stefon Diggs' departure in free agency. They addressed the need by adding veterans through free agency and trades, as well as drafting Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel to provide quarterback C.J. Stroud with new targets.
One key acquisition was veteran wide receiver Justin Watson, who joined the Texans after winning back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs and previously securing a championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team signed Watson to bring experience and reliability to their receiver room.
However, despite Watson's credentials, ESPN's DJ Ben-Amie projects that he may not make the Texans' 53-man roster. In his roster prediction, Ben-Amie lists six receivers—Nico Collins, Jayden Higgins, Jaylin Noel, Christian Kirk, Xavier Hutchinson, and Braxton Berrios—with Berrios potentially having an edge due to his special teams value.
Watson's recent performance includes 22 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns last season, and a more productive year prior with 27 receptions for 460 yards and three scores, averaging 17 yards per catch. He has shown a ability to make impactful plays in crucial moments but has never reached 500 receiving yards in a single season since entering the NFL in 2018.
At 29 years old, Watson has limited room for growth, which may lead the Texans to prioritize younger players like Xavier Hutchinson, who has untapped potential from his college career at Iowa State. This could factor into the team's decision-making during roster cuts.
