In a significant upset, the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the reigning NCAA Division I women's soccer champion, North Carolina Tar Heels, 2-0 in their season opener on Thursday night. This marks the first time since 2002 that the defending national champion lost its opening match of the season.
North Carolina entered the season with immense prestige, holding the preseason No. 1 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The program, renowned for producing U.S. national team players and winning a record 21 national titles under former coach Anson Dorrance, captured its latest championship last year under coach Damon Nahas. Many expected them to contend again this season.
However, Tennessee disrupted those expectations. The victory represents the first time the Lady Vols have ever defeated the nation's top-ranked team. The win was secured by two goals from Shae O'Rourke. Her first goal came in the 57th minute; receiving a pass from Jenna Stayart, O'Rourke beat the charging UNC goalkeeper and a defender before lofting a right-footed shot from outside the box into the far post. This was her first goal for Tennessee since transferring from South Carolina. O'Rourke added a second goal in the 75th minute, redirecting Sarah Kate Rath's low cross from the right wing just inside the far post.
Tennessee coach Joe Kirt emphasized that his team stuck to their identity, stating they were connected, vocal, energetic, and covered for each other throughout the game. Despite taking 14 shots and putting 6 on target, North Carolina was unable to get a ball past Tennessee sophomore goalkeeper Cayden Norris, resulting in their shutout defeat. It's noted that UNC also suffered shutout losses last season before ultimately winning the national title.
Adding to the significance of the upset, Tennessee did not receive a single vote in the preseason coaches poll, a situation expected to change when the next rankings are released.
