A new seven-a-side women's football competition, World Sevens Football, made its debut in May with a significant $5 million prize pool per tournament, backed by investor Jennifer Mackesy. The next edition will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from December 5–7, hosted at Bancard Field on Nova Southeastern University's campus.
Bayern Munich won the inaugural eight-team tournament in Portugal, defeating Manchester United in the final and claiming a $2.5 million prize. For the December event, all participating teams are expected to come from the Americas, with clubs from Brazil, Mexico, and the U.S. currently in discussions.
The competition features a half-size pitch, seven-a-side goals, rolling substitutions, and 15-minute halves, with background music played throughout. It distinguishes itself by involving current elite players from professional clubs rather than retired players or celebrities. Tobin Heath chairs the event's player advisory council, which has influenced its format and facilities.
Other participants in the debut event included Ajax, Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain, AS Roma, FC Rosengård, and Manchester City. The Florida event will take place over a weekend, starting with group games on December 5 and concluding with the final two days later, occurring two weeks after the 2025 NWSL Championship final.
