Arsenal in final stages of Ethan Nwaneri talks over new contract

Arsenal are finalizing a new long-term contract for midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, effectively ending any possibility of his departure. Nwaneri, whose current deal had entered its final 12 months, attracted significant interest from Premier League and foreign clubs.

However, the England Under-21 international prioritized staying at Arsenal, the club he joined at age eight. Negotiations accelerated upon his return from representing England and taking a holiday, as Arsenal could only propose new terms after he turned 18 in late March. The academy graduate is now ready to commit.

Nwaneri enjoyed a breakthrough 2024-25 season, contributing nine goals and two assists across 37 appearances for Mikel Arteta's team. This substantial playing time for a young talent meant game time assurances were not a demand during contract talks. He was primarily deployed on the right side of Arsenal's attack, featuring prominently when Bukayo Saka was injured, and is expected to soon occupy a more central role, providing competition and back-up for captain Martin Odegaard.

Analysis highlights Nwaneri's clear ambition. Despite his nine-goal season, he publicly stated he aimed for ten. He identified his goal against Manchester City as his standout moment from the season. Nwaneri also achieved notable Champions League milestones, becoming the youngest player to score in successive Champions League games (against Girona and PSV Eindhoven) and is now the third-youngest scorer in a Champions League knockout game, behind Jude Bellingham and Bojan.
