Real Madrid are planning to strengthen their center-back position during the 2026 summer transfer window. The club recognizes the need for reinforcements due to fitness issues affecting David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, both of whom are also out of contract at the end of the season.
Among the potential targets is Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. The French international's contract with Bayern expires on June 30, 2026, making him an attractive option for Real Madrid as a possible free transfer signing.
However, Bayern Munich's director Christoph Freund has expressed the club's desire to renew Upamecano's contract and retain him long-term. Freund praised Upamecano as an "outstanding player with a great personality" and confirmed there is no deadline for contract discussions.
Real Madrid previously executed a similar strategy by signing David Alaba on a free transfer after his Bayern Munich contract expired in 2021. The club attempted the same approach with Alphonso Davies, though unsuccessfully, as the Canadian left-back ultimately renewed with Bayern.
