The Dallas Mavericks secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft for the first time in franchise history during Monday's NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago. The outcome, heavily influenced by luck, marked a dramatic end to their rollercoaster season.
Dallas's luck began even before the lottery, as they won a coin flip against the Chicago Bulls (both 39-43) last month. This granted them a 1.8% chance at the top pick compared to Chicago’s 1.7%. The seemingly minor 0.1% difference proved decisive, as the Bulls ultimately landed the No. 12 pick.
With the top selection, the Mavericks are positioned to draft Cooper Flagg, the consensus No. 1 prospect. Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game during his freshman season at Duke.
The 2025 NBA Draft’s first round is scheduled for June 25 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
