Luka Doncic's potential contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers remains anticipated but not finalized. To secure their franchise player, the Lakers are focusing on keeping Doncic comfortable, including involving him in personnel decisions.
As part of this effort, the Lakers reportedly agreed to a multi-year deal with veteran guard Marcus Smart. To create roster space, the team waived guards Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin.
ESPN reports that Luka Doncic was instrumental in recruiting Marcus Smart, personally reaching out to express his desire to play with the defensive stalwart. Smart agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers after clearing waivers.
Smart brings significant defensive credentials, having won the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and earning three NBA All-Defensive First Team selections. Known for his physicality, strong hands, and high defensive IQ, he also offers valuable playoff experience for a team featuring Doncic and LeBron James.
However, concerns exist about the fit. The 31-year-old Smart may be past his prime defensively, and injuries limited him to only 54 games over the last two seasons. While a career 32.4% three-point shooter, his improved 39.2% shooting with Washington this year came in a small 15-game sample.
Despite potential drawbacks, Smart could be a significant contributor off the bench for the Lakers. He is expected to benefit from playing meaningful games on a contender rather than for a rebuilding team.
