New Seahawks WR Cooper Kupp Envisions Lethal Tandem with Jaxon Smith-Njigba

The Seattle Seahawks signed Cooper Kupp in March after trading star wide receiver DK Metcalf, seeking a top replacement. However, this move initially raised questions because both Kupp and existing receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba have excelled in the slot position, potentially creating overlap in the offense.

Kupp addressed these concerns by emphasizing the value of versatility in offensive play. He stated that having multiple receivers who can perform various roles, rather than being specialized, makes the offense more unpredictable and challenging for defenses. This philosophy is supported by their practice movements, where both players have been seen lining up in different positions, including wide, slot, and condensed formations.

During preseason and joint practices, such as those with the Green Bay Packers, Kupp and Smith-Njigba demonstrated effective chemistry and flexibility. They found success against defenses, with Smith-Njigba noting improvements in route-running and catching, and both building rapport with new quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold performed well in drills, completing passes to both receivers and converting key plays.

The partnership shows promise, with the 32-year-old Kupp and 23-year-old Smith-Njigba sharing slot duties while Smith-Njigba may take on more outside responsibilities. Their instant chemistry and adaptability in formations suggest that the initial concerns about redundancy are unfounded, as evidenced by their strong performances in practices and preseason games.
