Thunder hits McMaster: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joins Marauders practice

Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a native of Hamilton, joined the McMaster University men's basketball team for a practice session earlier this week. He wore his Thunder practice gear and signature SHAI 001 shoes during drills and full-intensity scrimmages.

The visit was coordinated through mutual connections with Canada Basketball and served as a strategic workout for SGA, who trains locally in the off-season with his skill coach. He was accompanied by his cousin, NBA player Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who recently signed a $62 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks.

McMaster's lead assistant coach, Sheldon Cassimy, noted that while players were initially nervous, they appreciated the rare opportunity to compete against elite talent. He emphasized how SGA's defensive intensity stood out, particularly his shot-blocking ability, which resulted in several blocks during the scrimmage.

The session provided both SGA with high-level preparation ahead of NBA training camps and gave university players firsthand exposure to the work ethic and skill of a top NBA guard.
