President Donald Trump revealed that FIFA officials presented him with the original FIFA Club World Cup trophy, which is currently displayed in the Oval Office. Trump explained that during FIFA President Gianni Infantino's visit to the White House in March, officials asked him to hold the trophy temporarily. However, they later informed him they would not retrieve it and were making a new trophy instead, allowing the original to remain in the Oval Office "forever".
This situation meant that Chelsea FC, despite winning the inaugural competition's final against Paris Saint-Germain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, received only a replica trophy for their victory.
During an interview with broadcaster DAZN before the final, Trump also joked about the possibility of issuing an executive order to change the name of "soccer" to "football" in the US, stating "I think I could do that."
Trump's appearance at the final generated significant attention. He and First Lady Melania Trump were jeered by fans when shown on the stadium screens and again when he walked onto the pitch alongside Infantino to present medals to the players. Infantino had recently confirmed FIFA opened a new office in New York City's Trump Tower. Further confusion occurred online when Trump remained on stage celebrating with the Chelsea players after presenting the replica trophy to captain Reece James.
