UEFA has rejected Real Madrid's appeal against disciplinary measures imposed on players Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, and Dani Ceballos for "improper conduct" following their Champions League Round of 16 second-leg match against Atlético de Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The upheld sanctions, originally issued on April 4th, include a €40,000 fine and a one-match suspension (applicable only for repeat offenses) for Rüdiger, a €30,000 fine and a similar suspended one-match ban for Mbappé, and a €20,000 fine for Ceballos. Vinícius Júnior, who was also investigated, received no penalty. The actions stemmed from UEFA's investigation into Real Madrid players celebrating qualification in front of away supporters, where some gestures were deemed inappropriate.
The controversy arose from post-match celebrations after Rüdiger scored the decisive penalty. Several players, including Ceballos who was not in the matchday squad, celebrated near the stadium's north stand, dodging objects thrown by the home crowd. UEFA concluded these players displayed unsportsmanlike behavior, leading to the fines and warnings.
Separately, UEFA confirmed a €15,000 fine for Real Madrid due to a supporter making a Nazi salute in the stands during the quarterfinal match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. UEFA also warned that any recurrence of racist behavior by Real Madrid fans could result in a ban on away ticket sales for future UEFA competitions, placing the club under close scrutiny for potential further sanctions during upcoming European tournaments.
