The UP Fighting Maroons, fresh off a three-peat victory in the FilOil EcoOil preseason tournament and as UAAP Season 87 champions, are preparing for their debut appearance at the World University Basketball Series (WUBS) in Tokyo. They will be joined by fellow UAAP team La Salle as the two Filipino representatives.
Team captain Gerry Abadiano emphasized the need for consistency as a primary goal for the WUBS campaign. He acknowledged that despite winning the FilOil title, the team displayed vulnerabilities and inconsistent play during the preseason tournament. Abadiano stressed the importance of executing their game plan effectively on both offense and defense consistently throughout all four quarters of their WUBS games.
The team arrived in Japan on Sunday, giving them several days to prepare before their opening game against Korea University on Saturday, August 9. While a potential matchup against La Salle could occur in the Finals or the 5th place match, Abadiano expressed excitement about facing unfamiliar international opponents, including teams from Australia, Chinese Taipei, and Japan. He highlighted the opportunity to gain new learnings and experience basketball in Japan.
Beyond the immediate tournament, Abadiano and the Fighting Maroons view the WUBS as crucial for their long-term development and preparation for the tougher grind of UAAP Season 88 starting in September. He stated that the offseason tournament is vital for identifying areas needing improvement, applying training lessons, and fostering team growth.
