Donald Trump’s eventful day at the Club World Cup final: Being booed, celebrating with Chelsea and a winner’s medal

Former US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump attended the match. While they received cheers upon arrival, Trump was booed by some fans when shown on the video screens during the pre-game national anthem and again later.

Trump presented medals to players alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. After handing the winner's trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James with Infantino, Trump remained on stage while Infantino departed. This caused confusion among the Chelsea players about whether to proceed with the trophy lift while Trump was still center stage.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez signaled for James to proceed, resulting in the unusual scene of the Chelsea squad celebrating their victory with Trump prominently in the middle. Players Cole Palmer and Reece James expressed confusion afterward, stating they expected Trump to leave the stage before the trophy lift, which is typically reserved for the winning team.

Several notable figures were spotted in Trump's suite, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, NFL legend Tom Brady, and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

Confusion also arose on social media as videos appeared to show Infantino giving Trump a winner's medal, prompting CNN Sports to contact FIFA for clarification on whether Trump was specifically awarded a medal and if his presence on stage during the lift was planned.
